Description

**CANCELLED**  Join naturalist and author John Bates to learn a bit about forest history. Milwaukee led the world in tanning leather in the early 1900s; however, hemlock tanneries were in operation throughout Wisconsin from the mid-1800s to the early 1920s. Most tanneries used hemlock bark for tanning the leather, and thus hemlock trees were cut down by the tens of millions to supply the tanneries. Many thousands of people were employed around the state in the tanbark industry. It’s a history that few people remember, but it was a fascinating art and a hugely important part of early Wisconsin’s economy and ecology. Come learn more about this lost story!

An evening of delicious nibbles and expanding your knowledge. Cash bar and complimentary appetizers 5 - 6 PM, program 6 - 7 PM. Registration required by May 19. Program held at the Discovery Center. Thursday, 5 - 7 PM. $17 ($14 members), $20 at the door.
