Camp Lake State Natural Area Paddle with Naturalist John Bates

Join Naturalist and Author John Bates as we explore Camp Lake and Pines State Natural Area, which features an undisturbed, wild, 37-acre lake set within a lovely pine forest. The extremely clear water of the lake supports an unusual community of plants as well as a vibrant bird community. Joining us will be Greg Sass, Fisheries Research Team Leader in the Office of Applied Science for the WDNR. Dr. Sass has conducted research on the importance of woody habitat in lakes, specifically on Camp Lake and nearby Little Rock Lake, and he’ll also discuss how Camp lake has evolved after the drought in the mid 2000s as well as another recent experiment there, too. We’ll sit under a pine canopy in between the two lobes of the lake and enjoy the peace of this wild place for lunch. This program is sponsored by the Tom and Barbara Olson Education Fund.  Participants are required to wear facemasks and PFDs for this program. Pack binoculars, water, lunch/snacks, bug repellent, and sunscreen. Canoes/PFDs provided, or feel free to bring your own canoe/kayak/paddles, and PFDs. Preregistration is required. Limited space available and include a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 8 participants. Participants will need to drive themselves to the start location of the trip (directions will be emailed prior to the trip). Do not come if you have had illness within 14 days of event (you will be able to receive a refund). NLDC reserves the right to cancel/refund if case levels significantly change and the program in deemed unsafe.  Register by 7/18. $50 ($45 members).  Monday, 10 am - 1 pm.
