Description

Border Lakes SNA, also known as the Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area, comprises 2,383 acres and features a mosaic of forest habitats interspersed with 15 undeveloped lakes and large ponds. The lakes, both named and unnamed, all have unaltered shorelines, representing some of the last remaining
lakes in northern Wisconsin where the native fish populations thrive with limited human influence. Perhaps most remarkable is the fact that no non-native plant or animal species have yet been found in any of the lakes. The pristine quality of the lakes along with their unique biological attributes make them highly
valuable as benchmarks for comparative research between managed and unmanaged lakes. Although logging has occurred throughout the site, the area still retains contiguous forest cover. We’ll hike the rolling 2.8-mile-long Mark Musolf  Family Trail loop around Knife Lake. Join Naturalist and Author
John Bates as we explore this interesting site. This program is sponsored by the Tom and Barbara Olson Education Fund.  Pack binoculars, water, bug repellent, sunscreen and a lunch.  Register by 8/9. $40 ($35 members). Directions to the trailhead will be given to registered participants.  Wednesday 10 am - 2 pm.  Please read our program and event registration and cancellation policy here.
