Description

The Winegar Moraine is a glacial deposit widely distributed across Vilas County.  Near Boulder Junction, these glacial deposits show variations in geology that highlight the dynamic nature of the glacial margin.  This trip will examine two moraine positions developed by the last advance of the Ontonagon Lobe of the Wisconsin Ice Sheet exposed along the Lumberjack Trail System near White Sand Lake.  Stops will show the diversity of rock types in the glacial deposits, soil variations and their influence on the forest ecology.  Registered participants will be sent directions to the trailhead and a list of what to bring prior to the trip.   This will be a moderately strenuous hike with some terrain but frequent stops.  Registration required by 9/16.  $40 ($35 members).
